Back in 2013, I had the chance to go on a school trip to Costa Rica for 10 days. Very thankfully, my parents weren’t going to let this opportunity for me pass up so I was able to go! It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had and I wanted to share a little bit about my trip for y’all!
My trip to Costa Rica was actually my first time ever on an airplane! I was suuuuper nervous, especially since I didn’t have my family with me for comfort. However, I quickly learned that for me, it’s not a big deal at all and I actually quite enjoy flying!
The good thing about this trip was that it included everything for us – all of the excursions, as well as food and drink! That being said, EVERY. SINGLE. MEAL. was beans and rice and although I do love me some beans and rice, eating it every day for every meal got super tiring. It’s funny because I remember the handful of days that I got super excited about our meals being switched up. One night, our hotel served us spaghetti which is my all-time favorite food so that was awesome for me. Another night, my friend and I decided to order pizza which was very refreshing for us. However, our first “break” from beans and rice was the day that we got to go out in groups and explore the town on our own. I was so pumped about getting to choose what kind of food I wanted. I can’t remember everything that they had there, but I do remember that there was a McDonald’s and a KFC. We decided to reminisce on our love for southern food and get KFC. Let me tell you, it was the best meal I have ever had in my life. Truly, I have never felt more relieved and satisfied from a meal. It was literally like God came down and served us a plate of pure Heaven. I can taste it just thinking about it. I’m all about food (if you can’t tell) so this felt like the best day ever for me.
The hotels that we stayed in were pretty nice for the most part. One of the hotels we stayed in (not pictured) had rooms that were personal little cabins which was super cute! At another one of the hotels, my friend and I made friends with one of the front desk workers which was fun and cool!
We went to a beach one day which was so much fun! There were cute little monkeys in every single tree. We were given bagged lunches that day to take with us in coolers and lunchboxes. The water was so clear (my first ever experience with clear seawater) which was amazing to me. While we were in the water, a raccoon came out in broad daylight and stole one of our classmates’ lunch and it was absolutely hilarious! Everyone was laughing so hard. Turns out, raccoons are very smart, as they were able to open the Ziplock bags and get to the chips and the sandwiches! The ocean floor was very rocky so we were instructed to bring water shoes which was super helpful. I did leave that day, however, with multiple cuts on my legs and a tiny little sting from a baby jellyfish!
We got to visit a local school and learn a little bit about their day to day life during school hours. The kids were so sweet and so much fun to hang out with!
We passed one of the local colleges one day and it was so interesting to see just how different it was from the outside alone compared to ours back home!
We went to a nature park which was really awesome! We hiked some trails and saw some wildlife, cool plants, and a beautiful waterfall!
We also went on a boat ride where we got to watch a worker feed an alligator which was quite interesting to see! We saw some babies too which was adorable!
We went on a hike through a forest which led us to the perfect view of a crater! Because it was so foggy, I couldn’t get a good picture of the crater itself. However, from the parking lot, I was able to get a great picture of the volcano!
We went to a hot springs which was so cool!! I had never been to one before and honesty had never even heard of them! There were multiple different “pools” that we could get in and it just felt amazing! I definitely want to visit more hot springs in my life!!
We went to an adventure park where we got to zip-line through the rainforest. I was scared to death but I am so glad that I did it. It was the most incredible thing I have ever done in my life. We were 600 feet in the air!!! I didn’t take any pictures while zip-lining because I really wanted to enjoy it and just take in the experience. I did capture one shot at the entrance of the park, but the views while in the air were just absolutely breathtaking!
I think what made this trip so exciting for me was that I got to go to a different country with a handful of my high school friends. I made so many memories that I am positive I will never forget. I would 100% visit Costa Rica again in the future. I would love to see some other areas of the country that I haven’t yet explored!
Have you been out of your home country? Where has been your favorite place to visit thus far?
